Most of these plantations don’t use any of the machines I saw on the smaller farms up North. Instead, they depend on the labor of enslaved persons, which is available in large numbers in the South. But the condition that these enslaved people live in is harsh and cruel.

I think slavery is undoubtedly the biggest social issue in the nation. It is also the nation’s greatest source of tension. Judging by the way things are going, I think the free states in the North will force the South to abolish slavery
