The Renaissance Mindset. Renaissance Religion. The Protestant reformation, in the philosophy of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and King Henry VIII further lessened the power of the Catholic Church in Europe. Protestantism placed emphasis on ritual and sacraments and placed the emphasis on an individual's direct relationship with God.

1. international: struggle for hegemony and empire outstrips the fiscal resources of the state

2. political conflict: conflict between the monarchy and the nobility over the “reform” of the tax system led to paralysis and bankruptcy.
