The Bayonet Constitution got its name because it was signed by King David Kalakaua at gunpoint. The Honolulu Rifles, made up of mostly white settlers, in concert with the Reform Party of Hawaii, forced the King to lessen the power of the Hawaiian monarchy.

The Reform Party, led by Lorrin A. Thurston, was led by American interests and played a key role in the overthrown of the monarchy and the subsequent annexation by the United States in 1898.
