A) One way that trade in some commodities was organized in the late 1800s and early 1900s that gave an economic advantage to merchants and companies in the United States is that the US forcefully made countries nearby and in their control or influence to essentially exclusively trade with the US. The US controlled trade in much of the Western Hemisphere, and used their immense military power to police trade in the region. The phrase, as depicted in the cartoon, “speak softly and carry a big stick”, means that America should negotiate, but also show that they have a lot of military strength, without actually doing anything, unless absolutely necessary.

B) One similar way trade was organized in the same time period to benefit Europe was that European powers used their military strength to pressure other countries into trading with them. This was similar to the big stick policy, but they established colonies and controlled trade through that. European powers also forced Asian countries to establish ports so that they could trade there. The fundamental principles of both the American big stick policy and its European counterpart are the same, as they control trade in the regions they want to trade in with their military strength and influence.

C) One consequence of this for one of the examples used in problem A is that American merchants and companies were able to have a lot of economic control in other regions, and their profits increased as they gained more control of trade in the regions they aimed to control. With economic control of a region, also comes a certain degree of political control, so many US companies used their control to influence political decisions in their favor. For example, the United Fruit Company used their economic control over some portions of South America, and inhibited the development of countries in South America like Guatemala.
