The First World War broke out as a result of multiple countries having to uphold their agreements with other countries.

In 1914, the heir to the throne of the Austria-Hungarian empire was assassinated by a Serbian in Bosnia.

Austria had been looking for a reason to go to war with Serbia and this was their chance. The next sequence of event was:

Austria declared war on Serbia with the backing of Germany, its allied partner in the Triple Alliance Russia - which guaranteed Serbian independence - declared war on Austria and began mobilizing her forces Germany ordered Russia to stop mobilizing and when Russia refused, Germany declared war on Russia France then declared war on Germany and Austria because they were allies of Russia in the Triple Entente Germany, not believing that the British would support France, declared war on France Britain did not immediately declare war on Germany but did so when Germany marched troops through Belgium to attack France. The British could not abide this because they were the guarantors of Belgian independence. Italy did not immediately follow their Alliance partners but instead waited till 1915 and joined the Entente by declaring war on Austria.

In conclusion, the First World War started as a result of alliances and had countries not had the backing of other countries, the world might have been spared the massacre that was the First World War.

As Russia had guaranteed Serbia to protect them from Austrian threats, later Russian Empire would declare war on the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Then Germany had upheld its end of the bargain by being in an alliance with Austria-Hungary and declared war on Russia and France since France was allied with Russia. Later then Britain would declare war on Germany for invading neutral Belgium. After that the Kingdom of Italy would join the Entente and declare war on Austria-Hungary.
