Why was Martin Luther King so concerned by the issue of poverty in America?

The poverty rate was higher among African-Americans, more than the poverty rate of White people. This occurred because of the fact that White people did not like Black people as tenants, or did not sell their houses/homes to them. They thought they would not have the money to pay for them, and besides, the South was segregated at the time.
