The Middle Ages in Europe took place after the Roman collapse in the 5th century CE to the period of Renaissance during the 13th-15th century.  It was first introduced by Italians with talent engaging in a revival of Classical learning and culture.  A few men especially Petrarch were very conspicuous among people in the middle age.  The humanists in the era did invent it in order to distinguish themselves in different eras from one another.  In such areas of the world, the Middle Ages can be described as a respectable period of history standing out from other eras like the Ming Dynasty.
