The average day on the trail started early, around 6 am. Once the animals and wagons were ready, the day's journey began. Wagons were pulled by slow-moving oxen that traveled about two miles an hour. Most people walked alongside the wagons. At midday, when it was hot, the wagon train took a break. During this break, called nooning, the oxen and pioneers would rest and eat. Then travel continued until about 5 pm. On a typical day, pioneers would travel about 15 miles. Some days they went farther, and on other days much less. For example, it could take an entire day just to cross a river
