D) Protestors were angry about the war in Vietnam.
EVIDENCE: In 1968, anti-war Democrats had no major candidate to represent them. Frustrated, they gathered outside the Democratic National Convention, which was held in Chicago in August 1968. They begin to loudly protest, calling for an end to the Vietnam War and changes to the election system. Conflicts soon arose between the protesters and the police outside the convention, leading to a riot. Police set up barriers, and protesters resisted, sometimes throwing objects at the police. Officers responded by beating protesters and using tear gas on them. Following the riots, many began to lose faith in the government, specifically in the Democratic Party. Overall, the Democratic National Convention was in crisis.
Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey had come out in support of Johnson's war policies, and anti-war delegates within the convention were eventually arrested and beaten as were reporters and medics. The Democratic Party became severely divided. As the nation seemed to descend further into chaos and violence, more people lost faith in the American political system to protect and provide their civil rights and liberties.
