Why did many immigrant groups migrate to the United States?

In the late 19th century, people in many parts of the world decided to leave their homes and immigrate to the United States. Fleeing crop failures, land and employment shortages, tax increases and famine, many people came to the United States because it was seen as a place of economic opportunity.
