Taiwan has been governed independently from China since 1949, but Beijing views the island as part of its territory, Washington does not officially recognize the Taiwanese government. But it has sold billions of dollars worth of arms to Taiwan and hasn’t ruled out defending it against an attack from the Chinese.China, has spoken out against Beijing’s efforts to undermine democracy.
