How did the continental army survive Valley Forge

I don't even remember how they survived. What I do know is that the Continental Army stayed at Valley Forge for about six months in the winter of 1777-1778. The conditions during this time period were extremely cold and harsh. The army during this time period received help from a former Prussian military officer, Friedrich Wilhelm Baron von Steuben, that transformed the Continental Army into a unified fighting force capable of beating the British. The site the camp was located at was chosen so Washington could keep a close enough eye on British troops sheltering in Philadelphia, but was far enough to prevent any surprise attacks on the Continental Army.
