Their dangerous journey across the Atlantic Ocean was undertaken to create a “godly commonwealth” that would show what a new England, reformed according to the Word of God, would look like. The colonists of Massachusetts Bay were called upon to adhere to a rigid doctrine of salvation (founded on the notion of predestination), and if they did not, they were shown the door.
