Colonial attitudes towards government and individuals have changed since the American Revolution in that it instituted the system of republicanism rather than the absolutist monarchy that was the system of colonial government.

Republicanism and Federalism led America to be an independent country and the first country to have a written political constitution, which contributed to the establishment of a democratic government regime in the country.

Democracy, therefore, is a system of government where sovereignty comes from the people, that is, individuals are the ones who choose their political representatives from universal suffrage, and have the right to decide and participate in government decisions.
