After the war, Cuba was not a completely free country. Democratic ideals did not take root in that country. Several factors point to this fact. The United States liberated Cuba, but, in return, gained the island of Guam and the Philippines. During the peace talks, diplomatic representatives of Cuba and the Philippines were banned from participating in the talks. The United States did not annex Cuba, but the Cubans had to recognize the American administration. The Cubans also had to give the Americans in the Guantanamo Bay ransom. All of the above factors point to the fact that democratic ideals were not represented at the end of the Spanish-American War and that the United States sought its interest.
