The Great Movement, the migration of Southern-born African Americans to places with greater social and economic prospects in the early twentieth century, played a crucial role in the lives of millions of people. There were suggestions at the beginning of the Great Migration and as it was underway that migration from the South could be an important way to improve the health of African Americans (Wright, 1906; Myrdal, 1948), but also questions about unfavorable health conditions in urban areas to which blacks migrated (Bureau of the Census, 1918). However, to our knowledge, no study has assessed the long-term effect of the Great Migration on migrant people's health outcomes. Our paper addresses this issue, focusing on mortality among African Americans born in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana states of the "Deep South."
