In Puerto Rico, the majority of the population (93.6%) lives in urban areas like cities and suburbs. This is similar to America, where populations are very dense in the large cities. However, Puerto Rico didn't always have these cities. They started off as an agricultural country, with most of their income coming from trading in their port cities. These big trading cities grew the fastest, with huge increases in population and urbanization, while everywhere else, especially in mountainous regions, there wasn't as much demand for housing, so they stayed rural, living in small farmhouses, while the big cities grew into a wealthy area, with a high population, and multistory apartment buildings to accommodate, just like our cities. Puerto Ricans faced a recession in 2006 leading to mass immigration to the U.S. This lower quality of life brought down the quality of the housing too, and we see the same things in America where large factories and apartment buildings can become abandoned. Over all, Puerto Rico is very similar to America when it comes to housing.
