Explain why Houston wanted to move the Republic’s archives and why Angelina Eberly and other Austin residents were so upset about it. Where did the archives ultimately end up?
In 1842, Sam Houston wanted to take the archives of Texas and move them from the capital of Austin to Houston. President Houston wanted to protect them from possible damage because the Mexican army had invaded San Antonio, Goliad, and Refugio and Houston anticipated their approach toward the capital. He wanted to protect the documents, and the history, and heritage of the Texas Republic. Angelina Eberly and other Austin residents witnessed the archives being removed and staged a massive protest. They feared Houston was moving the capital from Austin to Houston and they objected. Houston withdrew his efforts to remove, the archives at the protest of the citizens and they remained in Austin.
