The Sequoyah Constitutional Convention was an American Indian-led attempt to secure statehood for Indian Territory as an Indian-controlled jurisdiction, separate from the Oklahoma Territory. Although unsuccessful, the convention paved the way for the creation of the U.S. state of Oklahoma.
