People lost faith in god during the dark ages, and really they couldn't improve their medicine. They had no knowledge of the germ, and frequently did not bathe. The reason people believed in god more was that the Church controlled all information in the Bible AND many monarchs listened to the Church, and the Pope was the closest thing to the main political leader on Earth.

the causes of the dust bowls were severe droughts,   lands became dry and hard, temperature was higher than usual, hot and dry conditions killed crops, high winds. because of those factors, the winds kicked up dry soil and created clouds of dust.
