The Spanish focused on religious conversion and military control in colonization, though their economy also fared well in their attempts. Spain restricted trade, prohibited manufacturing, stifled local industry and handicrafts, impeded the growth of towns, and prevented civilians from selling to soldiers in order to protect mercantilism.  They also introduced European livestock, disease and vegetation when colonizing. While livestock and vegetation helped grow the economy in the Southwest, new diseases decreased the American Indian populations greatly. Many spanish settlements had colonists of mixed racial backgrounds, like mestizos. Spanish succession in colonization inspired other empires to try their hand at colonization.

French colonization was committed to expanding Catholicism around the globe Unlike other imperial powers, France had good relationships with native peoples as they expanded westward, with Champlain's efforts to create healthy alliances. Their alliances with the American Indians proved to be helpful in the French Indian war in 1754.  In order to gain economic success like the Spanish did, they established fur trade and colonial outposts. Later on, these colonies in the west Indies and tropical zones, started sugar plantation sites.. Cheap labor was was used to make profit, and African slavery brought a large population of African’s to French colonies.

Dutch colonization depended upon powerful corporations, such as: the Dutch East India Company, chartered in 1602 to trade in Asia, and the Dutch West India Company, established in 1621 to colonize and trade in the Americas. Their colony was named New Netherlands and they used fur trading posts both as a form of commerce but also to create alliances with the native peoples within their regions.

Religious competition between Catholicism and Protestantism fueled English colonization, although England lacked the financial resources for colonization and exploration endeavors. The first permanent colony established was Jamestown. While relationships with native americans were healthy at first, as the English needed trade to get food, their relationships eventually became more and more tense, as they began occupying more of the Native American’s land and clearing them out to establish plantations as a source of commerce.
