What did the British hope to accomplish with the Intolerable Acts?

The British wanted to punish America. They were mad at the colonist for their riots and uprisings against the unfair government. So the British passed the Intolerable acts to take back control. They took away people's rights so that they could not effectively fight against the monarchy.
