The traders who came to the nations beyond the Sahara came with goods that those nations did not have. In return, those nations had goods that the traders did not have either so they were able to trade.

Better technology and logistical practices such as caravan travelling and the establishment of motels in the desert, meant that people could go longer distances and survive the harsh Sahara weather.

As more trade happened in West Africa, empires such as the Mali empire, became very wealthy and spread their influence far and wide.

Islam also spread to west Africa because most of the traders were Muslim and they preached their religion.
