The intensified colonial struggle between France and Britain over the Ohio Valley in 1753 foretold a future war. In the winter 1754, Washington was sent to the eastern shores of Lake Erie to urge the French to leave the area in peace. However, France had managed to declare the Ohio countryside to itself and refused to hand over the lands to Britain, and had already built a fort at Fort Duquesne on the site.

Washington built Fort Necessity less than a hundred miles south, but the French captured it on July 3, 1754, forcing Washington and its men to surrender. In early 1755, Washington received permission from the French to return to Virginia.
