The Macedonians lived immediately to the north of Greece. The Greeks, especially Athenians, viewed them as "backwards," less civilized than the high culture of Athenian society.

As the Macedonian kingdom became more powerful under Philip of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great), the Athenian statesman Demosthenes even went as far as to slander the Macedonians as "barbarians."

It should be remembered, however, that one of the greatest philosophers of Athens originally hailed from Macedon. Aristotle was born in Stagira, in Macedon.
