The Underground Railroad was not a literal railroad but a symbolic one that stood for the secret pathways followed by slaves to escape from their masters, as well as the houses, where they stayed in the course of their flight. In that period, the American slave masters frequently lost their slaves because they wanted to run away from the hardships they experienced.
