Some states and cities have official holidays on Juneteenth. In 1980, Texas established Juneteenth as an official state holiday. More recently, in 2020, Virginia and New York recognized Juneteenth as a holiday for state employees. Many other states have different levels of celebration. Several cities host Juneteenth celebrations. Advocates are working with Congress to have Juneteenth made a national holiday.
