Aristotle's Politics:
"We have next to consider how many forms of government there are, and what
they are... The true forms of government are those in which the one, the few or
the many govern with a view to the common interest... Of forms of government in
which one rules, we call that kinship; that in which more than one but not many
rule, we call aristocracy: when citizens at large administer the state for the
common interest, the government is called democracy."
"The citizen...of necessity differs under each form of government; and our
definition is best adapted to the citizen of a democracyHe who has the power
to take part in the deliberative or judicial administration of any state is said by us
to be a citizen of that state; and, speaking generally, a state is a body of citizens
sufficing for the purposes of life.
