This resulted in the decision of who will be the next president up to Congress. At this time, John Quincy Adams (who finished second) made a deal with Henry Clay in order to win. Clay would drop out of the race and help Adams become president by convincing members of Congress to vote for Adams. In return, John Quincy Adams would name Henry Clay Secretary of State, a highly saught after position.
