As the Commanding General of the Union forces in 1864, Grant implemented a plan to divide the Southern States and not allow General Lee and his Confederate troops to retreat south. General Sherman marched his army south, winning a decisive and important victory in Atlanta. After, under the orders of General Grant, he marched his army east, in what became known as "Sherman's March to the Sea".
