Being a staunch catholic, Louis XIV believed in the notion "one king, one law, one faith" which led to the revoking of the Edict of Nantes which granted religious freedom to the Protestants. But initially, he did not harm the Protestants. He simply started by rewarding any of the French Huguenots who would convert to Catholicism but later on, he began forced conversion. The final straw was the issuance of the Edict of Fontainebleau which ordered the destruction of Protestant churches, establishments, and schools, leading to mass emigration of the Protestants to other European countries. His attempts at making France the most powerful Catholic state in Europe made him tolerate the French Huguenots which turned unsuccessful, thus leading to a mass exodus of the people to other countries.
