What were the Browns and other families asking
the Supreme Court to do?

The Browns and other families were ultimately asking the Supreme Court to stop segregation in schools and allow African American children to choose which school they wanted to attend.

This case was called the Brown v. Board of Education and it stopped racial segregation in public schools. This started when a little African American girl had to walk over a mile to her school while there was a school for white children not even a few blocks away.

This ended up going to the Supreme Court, because in this case the term "separate but equal" was not equal at all. Many families and people ended up coming forward to end the racial segregation in schools, as it wasn't fair or equal to African American children.

Eventually, the racial segregation in schooling became outlawed, thanks to the Brown v. Board of Education. Although at first many of the states did not comply to this, in the 1970's all American public schools were unsegregated and all colors of children could now go to school together.
