Jefferson as a big proponent of individual liberty and of voting would be really happy with so many people being able to vote. He rightly saw it as a check on political violence. It was his big issue later in life. He’d love there were non-christian elected officials.

Washington would probably be fascinated with home rule cities. His only comment during the constitutional debates was that there should be a member of Congress for every 30,000 people rather than 40,000. He felt 40,000 was too many for people to be in tune with their representative and vis a versa. In modern America single member district City Council members in cities or small town mayors come closest to having that many constituents. He as well as the other founders would probably think cities needed more powers at the expense of state government. Most States had 300,000 people at the time the Constitution passed, the size of a now mid sized American city.

Hamilton would be stunned at the success of building New York and the U.S. into a commercial and industrial powerhouse.

I think they would all be a little surprised that it ended up being the federal government rather than the states that became the primary enforcer of civil liberties.

I don’t think they would be surprised at the level of regulation in the economy given how big and complex the country has become. They wrote the commerce clause broad for a reason.

The vitriol wouldn’t bug them much. They were vicious in their day, journalists sure as heck weren’t neutral then, and I think they’d be impressed by how we’ve stayed away from more despotic tendencies liking jailing political opponents, etc.

What would shock them the most was how few people were farmers anymore.
