After the First World War, the newly formed League of Nations proved to be weak, unstable, and ineffective. Many historians blame this on the fact that the United States never joined as well as the League's overall failure to prevent another world war. After World War II, however, the formation of the United Nations provided the world with the most stable, powerful, and effective international peace-keeping organization in history.
