He succeeded in the other kingdoms except for four kingdoms of which the Kalinga kingdom was inclusive. He was succeeded by his son Asoka in 273 B.C.E. Asoka took it upon himself to conquer the Kainga Kingdom.

He was successful in this war which he engaged in, in 262 B.C.E, but the result of the war also affected him tremendously.

More than 100,000 civilians and soldiers died in this war. This affected Asoka's view of war as he condemned the outcome of the war and decided to become a Buddhist and preach the Buddhist teachings across his empire.The Edicts of Asoka which stipulated an end to slavery and sought justice for humans and good treatment of animals were also spread across the empire in 260 B.C.E.
