The name of the city of St. Petersburg was changed to Leningrad following the Russian Revolution to celebrate the leader of the Bolsheviks now in power, that died in 1924.

On January 26, 1924, a few days after Lenin's death, the Soviet of workers, farmers and the Red Army wrote a request to change the name of the city "at the request of the workers who are grieving." The idea came from Grigori Zinoviev, president of the Soviet. Three days later, Mikhail Kalinin, one of the members of the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union signed the decree by which the city would be called Leningrad.
