During the siege of Vicksburg in 1863 the Union Army

A victory at the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1863 gave the Union control of the Mississippi River in the American Civil War. Following the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant's Union army moved south. Grant hoped to secure control of the Mississippi River for the Union.

because of its location and commercial importance, atlanta was used as a center for military operations and as a supply route by the confederate army during the civil war. therefore, it also became a target for the union army. general william tecumseh sherman and his troops captured the city in 1864.

the tariff was created to protect industry in the northern part of the united states. industries in the north were being driven out of business by imported goods that were priced at a low rate. the goal was to protect these industries   by taxing the goods.
