While some of the European expansion overseas in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries depended on current tech, it was substantially more reliant on latest techniques.

European nations began a phase of intense exploration and invasion into the "New World" in the late 15th century. After recovering from the Black Death epidemic and in quest of new products and wealth, Europe in the late 15th century sought to increase commerce and contacts with the rest of the globe. Profit motivated explorers to seek out new trade routes to the East and cut out the middlemen. Spanish conquistadors had gone deep into Central and South America by the early 16th century. In 1516, European explorers arrived in Rio de la Plata. In 1536, Buenos Aires, a permanent colony, was founded, and in 1537, Asunción, in what is now Paraguay, was founded. The indigenous peoples attacked Buenos Aires, forcing the immigrants to flee, and the city was abandoned in 1541. Juan de Garay built a second, permanent settlement in 1580.
