The oldest known Mahabharata epic were composed around 400 BCE. For Ramayana, it is even older epic and the oldest palm-leaf manuscript found in Nepal are as old as 11th century CE. According to Hindu beliefs the events of Ramayana took place during a time-period known as Treta Yug and the events of Mahabharata took place during a time known as Dvapara Yuga.
