In 1821, Benjamin Lundy established the first American anti-slavery newspaper, The Genius of Universal Emancipation, in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. In 1831, William Lloyd Garrison of Boston began publishing The Liberator, which was to become one of the most famous antislavery newspapers in the country.The Liberator (1831–1865) was a weekly abolitionist newspaper, printed and published in Boston by William Lloyd Garrison and, through 1839, by Isaac Knapp. Religious rather than political, it appealed to the moral conscience of its readers, urging them to demand immediate freeing of the slaves ("immediatism").
