In common sense, what does thomas paine say in response to the argument that the colonies have done well under the control of britain?

He states that the British government didn't help colonies because it wanted for the colonies to be great, but rather because it suited them economically, and that they would destroy the colonies if it didn't suit them economically. Basically it was out of self interest and not out of a genuine desire to help the colonies and their people.
