Explain the importance of the plantation system to the economy of Texas

The plantation system enabled Texans to farm massive amounts of land for cash crops that could be sold directly at market and would bring immediate money into the state. Cotton grew exceptionally well in the climate of Texas, and it quickly became a staple of the economy along with vegetables, corn, wheat, and sugar. Most families living in Texas at the time relied on agriculture to sustain them, but there were few plantations in Texas. In order to farm massive amounts of land, particularly land that grew cotton, farmers needed many laborers. Slaves made up the workforce on plantations, but they were expensive, a fact that helped in separating rich plantation owners from regular farmers and in creating an elite upper class in Texas. Plantation owners accumulated a great deal of wealth and power within the state and influenced the state’s position on slavery.
