The Whigs was a party based on the opposition of President Andrew Jackson and his followers which they called the Jacksonian Democrats. This party was led by Henry Clay and was formally formed in 1833 (even though ideas and relationships were formed before this year). Some things this party stood for was protective tariffs, national banking, and federal aid for internal improvement. This party eventually fell in the mid 1850s due to the issue of slavery. Although the Whigs party helped John Quincy Adams win the presidency in 1825, Andrew Jackson took advantage of the Spoils System to win the next term.
