Untouchables of India HAT
A law was passed in 1938 in the Madras region of India, making discrimination against untouchables a punishable felony, and most provinces of British India rapidly followed its example. By 1947, many laws banning discrimination against untouchables were on the books, and when the issue was broached in the Constitutional Assembly, the adding of an anti-discrimination article in the 1948 Indian Constitution received almost undisputed backing. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru used his authority and the example of Mahatma Gandhi to assure the measure's adoption.
After the Constitution's passage, official steps were put into practice to avoid further discrimination and to rectify earlier injustice to the lower castes.
