The Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 provided for the gradual elimination of tribal land ownership in favor of
allotting land to individual adult Indian landowners, who would then be granted United States citizenship,
but at the same time could not be given full title to their property for years (supposedly to prevent
them from selling their land to speculators).
