Independence from the United States was declared on July 4, 1776, when colonial ties with England were severed.

From 1776 to 1787, the United States came under the Confederation regime, where States enjoyed absolute sovereignty. In 1787, the Constitution, in force until today, was promulgated.

Outraged by the Intolerable Laws, settlers' representatives met at the First Continental Congress of Philadelphia, held in September 1774. In it, they decided to send a request to the English government for the Intolerable Acts to be revoked.

George Washington was appointed commander of the American forces and Thomas Jefferson was charged with writing the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was approved on July 4, 1776.

In their struggle for independence, the settlers relied on military aid from Spain, the Netherlands and France.
