The Ottoman Empire was one of the most extensive, in territorial terms, and one of the longest-lived in history. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, it experienced its great heyday, with a vast region under its rule. This region extended from Asia Minor to North Africa, not to mention a considerable part in Eastern Europe. However, all the opulence and strength of the Ottoman Empire began to be put to the test in the so-called Russo-Turkish Wars, in the 19th century, and especially in the First World War (1914-1918). The decline and end of the Ottoman Empire must be understood from the context of the First War.

Having contracted an aversion against the Russian Empire over several decades, when the First World War broke out, the Ottoman Empire sided with the Germans (with whom they also had trade agreements), the Italians and the Austrians and against the allies of Russia, that is, the United Kingdom and France. The war actually ended in 1918 with a widespread catastrophe on the European continent and a humiliating defeat for Germany and its allies. Even though it officially ended that year, in some regions, the war continued. This was the case at the heart of the Ottoman Empire, Asia Minor, or Anatolia, where the capital Istanbul is located.

Initially, the winning powers of the war managed to establish a first attempt at peace with the Ottoman Empire, in October 1918, by signing the Armistice of Mudros at the homonymous port, aboard the ship HMS Agamemnon. This agreement determined the division of the territories belonging to the Ottomans between the victorious states of the war.
