Realizing that words cannot accurately capture the daily struggle against poverty waged by emigrants, Riis learned to photograph. Equipped with a camera, he documented the slums, salons, apartment buildings and streets of New York. His photographs appear rude and gloomy, revealing terrible living conditions that most New Yorkers did not even know then. Through his work, he tried to draw attention to these facts.
