A labour and production model pioneered by Cabot Lowell in 19th century is known as Lowell system. It was designed so that various steps in the manufacturing process can be brought under one roof and instead of men or children, adult women were employed for production. It was first used in the Waltam and Lowell textile mills during the industrial revolution and contributed in the growth of the cotton industry in US. The system was dependent  on  the rural girls(mill girls), who worked in the mills  and lived in the company boarding houses. Later with the growth of competition in the textile industry this system became unprofitable and collapsed.
