The event that set off World War I was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife Sophie by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist, on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo.
In reply to the assassination, Austria-Hungary declared an ultimatum to Serbia, which was partly denied. Austria-Hungary suspended diplomatic relations and declared war. Following the Secret Treaty of 1892 Russia and France mobilized their armies. Russia's mobilization set off full Austro-Hungarian and German mobilization. Quickly all the Great Powers besides Italy had taken sides and gone to war.
On June 28,1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand was an heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However he was shot to death with his wife by an Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo. Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian government for the attack. But Russia was on Serbian's side. It eventually lead to world war 1
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914 by a Serbian nationalist outraged Austria-Hungary. Previous to the assassination, many European contries had been forming alliancies which now gained great importance. Austria-Hungary had made an alliance with Germany in 1879. Italy then joined this alliance in 1882. This alliance was against Russia, who also signed alliances with France in 1894. Britain then joined this alliance in 1907 to protect themselves against Germany's growing threat. Russia had also made an alliance with Serbia before the imminent threat of war because of the large number of Slavs that populated Serbia whom Russia swore to protect.
As Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28, the rest of the countries had to follow suit. Supporting Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy entered the conflict and Russia, France and Britain did so too.
